It is pretty common for the teachers to find ways to make social studies much more interesting and engaging for the students as this subject seems boring to them. But, the good news is that there are many ways to make this subject interesting and engaging for the kids. First, however, you should know the right steps. If you are an elementary teacher and teaching the classroom that teaches K-12 students, here are some of how the teaching is done.
Show Them What They Should Love About It
It is known to all that teaching social studies is a boring matter, and if it is not taught in the right manner, the students will never find interest in the subject. Hence, as the teacher, it should be your duty to show them what is good in the subject. Of course, history might not be the best subject for most of them, but you should carry on some interesting and good social studies activities that will help the kids concentrate and start to love the subject more than ever.
Do Not Always Rely On The Text Book
The textbook seems to be too old fashioned these days. It just has some of the old pictures of the Kings and Queens and some pictures of monuments and long paragraphs that seem to be disgusting for the children to learn. So, apart from using the textbook, you can also use visual representations or other learning tools to help the kids show interest in the subject.
Incorporating Movement
Most modern teachers look for ways how to incorporate the movements during social study classes. Some of these ways include using the human timeline, the game of the four corners, using the hand motions and the mnemonic devices, teaching a dance that belongs to a certain region or period, and using tableau strategy. These ways are so interesting that they will make the kids fall for the subject in a new way.
Reading aloud
If you search, you will find various non-fiction and historical fiction books available that you can read aloud during the history lesson every day. All these will help in arousing interest in the mind of the students. You can also use them along with the guided reading teams and literature books for bringing history into the current ELA block.
Use Of Technology
Just as you are learning about the past, it does not mean that you cannot use the tech social studies activities? There are so many social studies websites and apps available that will help the kids learn more and find interest. Some of the ideas include the use of interactive websites, playing the audio and video podcasts, visiting the virtual museum exhibitions, use of the green screen technology for recording, use of the QR codes, making animated videos, trying the AR to make the printed primary book to come to life and so on.
These activities will help make social studies much more thrilling and exciting for the kids to start learning social studies.
